Poverty in the Philippines
Causes of Poverty in the Philippines:
|
In the Philippines, poverty is the biggest problem and its reduction has always been slow. It remains to be a challenge among our government officials to solve this social problem.
The current president, Duterte suggested to develop ancestral lands to provide income for indigenous people. Provide free irrigation to lessen the burden on farmers. Expand agricultural production through agri-financing reforms and implementation of Land Bank programs for farmers. His idea in lessening poverty is good but he is currently focusing on the war against drugs. |
In the past, the time when the Philippines was colonized by other countries like the Spaniards; they greatly influenced our country’s traditions, culture and beliefs. And the Filipinos became indolent and the government started to be corrupt because of collecting high standardized taxes from the Filipinos who only have small businesses. The friars at that time did not preach love, hope and unity but instead they encouraged Filipinos to buy prayer books such as Doctrina Cristiana and Pasyon. Since Filipinos were just taught to pray, it caused them to depend everything on God and by not doing anything to fulfill their dreams, they became poor.
In this present era, there are so much things that could greatly lose the Filipinos’ motivation to perform their jobs properly and for those who don’t have jobs yet, they do nothing for them to have one because of the addiction of the useless things that suddenly came into the lives of the Filipinos such as mahjong, intake of drugs, cigarettes, alcoholic drinks and bets on cockfights.
Therefore, our actions are the cause of poverty in our country. In order for what our most recent President, Duterte has proposed to work regarding poverty, we must cooperate on his implementations to lessen poverty. Poverty cannot completely be eliminated, although it can be lessened.
